Geocart® Version 2.6, the Macintosh map projection program

Since all projections introduce distortions of some kind into the map, various techniques have been developed to reduce the distortion. One of these techniques in interrupting. As a physical process you may think of an interruption as a tearing of the globe in the same way you would tear an orange peel and flatten it. The effect of tearing is to create several regional maps that are stuck together at specific points. Geocart can interrupt some kinds of projections, most notably the pseudo-cylindrical.

Geocart can interrupt a map in several different ways. The world map above was interrupted using a 12 section interrupt (bottom left in the selection table below). Many other interrupt schemes are available depending on the representation or purpose that you are seeking to display. The bottom left and bottom right interruptions are best suited for reconstructing world maps on to spheres.
